Radio as Community Infrastructure
There's a version of radio that exists purely as background noise — automated playlists piped out to empty rooms. That's not what KOCT Radio is. For us, the community isn't just our audience; it's our reason for existing. The signal travels from our tower into people's homes, workplaces, and cars, but the relationship flows both ways.
Community events are where that two-way relationship becomes tangible. Here's how KOCT shows up outside the studio, and how you can be part of it.
Types of Community Events KOCT Hosts or Participates In
Live Remote Broadcasts
Several times a year, KOCT takes the show on the road. Live remote broadcasts are exactly what they sound like — a full radio broadcast conducted on location at a community event, festival, business opening, or civic gathering. Our DJs set up on-site, interview local participants, and bring the energy of the event directly to listeners at home.
Remote broadcasts are free to attend and open to the public. They're a great opportunity to see the technical side of radio broadcasting up close and meet the faces behind the voices.
Local Music Showcases
Each year, KOCT partners with local venues to host live music events spotlighting artists from the region. These events serve multiple purposes:
- Giving local musicians a larger platform
- Connecting listeners with artists they've heard on air
- Building the kind of live music culture that makes a community vibrant
School and Youth Programs
KOCT runs occasional broadcasting and media literacy workshops for local schools. These sessions teach young people about audio production, storytelling, and the history of radio — and sometimes result in student-produced segments airing on our station. We believe the next generation of broadcasters, musicians, and media professionals often starts here.
Listener Meetups
Informal listener meetups — at local coffee shops, parks, or community centers — bring KOCT's audience together in person. These gatherings are low-key, friendly, and often surprising: people who've been listening to the same station for years meeting one another for the first time.
Upcoming Event Calendar
We post all confirmed events on the Community Events section of our website and announce them on air at least two weeks in advance. Events are typically free or low-cost, and family-friendly unless otherwise noted.
To make sure you don't miss anything:
- Subscribe to our weekly newsletter via the website footer
- Follow KOCT on social media for day-of updates and reminders
- Ask your favorite DJ on air — they'll always know what's coming up
How to Propose an Event or Collaboration
Community organizations, local businesses, schools, and nonprofits are welcome to reach out about potential collaborations. KOCT regularly partners with groups whose work aligns with our community mission. We especially welcome outreach from:
- Arts organizations and music venues
- Schools and youth programs
- Community festivals and cultural events
- Local charities looking for broadcast support
Use our Contact page to get in touch with a brief description of your event or idea. Our programming team reviews all community partnership requests and responds as quickly as possible.
Why This Matters
A radio station without its community is just a transmitter. The shows, the music, the conversations — all of it is built on the foundation of real people who care about what we're doing. When you show up to a KOCT event, share our content, call in to a show, or simply tune in every day, you're participating in something that genuinely belongs to this place and these people. That's what we're here for.
